Lifetime Fitness
Fad diets are not the answer to sustainable weight loss! The answer is lifetime fitness and nutrition. This section will focus on exercises for all shapes and sizes! Being a Personal Trainer, I’ve had many clients with various goals. But I can confidently say that 95% of my clients come to me for motivation and direction. Let’s be honest, it can be very difficult to start incorporating exercise as a goal for lifetime fitness. Maybe you’ve jumped on the exercise band wagon around that New Year’s Resolution time. Lot’s of people do! Gym’s swell to capacity as people are motivated by a new year and a new starting point. Some people stick with it and keep up an exercise program throughout the whole year, congratulations if you are one of them! Sadly, and more common than not, most people stop or give up. There are a couple of reasons for falling off the lifetime fitness bandwagon: - People start off with great intensity and have an amazing workout on Monday. You feel great! You can conquer the obesity epidemic! Wednesday morning rolls around, your incredibly sore and can barely walk up the stairs to get into the office. If this has not ever happened to you, do not laugh at the people that cannot sit in a chair without yelping, it might be you one day!
Keep in mind that if you haven’t exercised since the last New Year, exercise will be a shock to your system. Start off slowly and progress over time. Moderate soreness is normal after a workout. It usually sets in 1-2 days after your workout. This is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). If pain is unbearable and you believe you may have injured yourself, contact your physician. - How exactly do all those torture devices work? Being unsure of how to operate equipment can be a big turnoff. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
There are many great “toys” at the gym that can add variety and increase the effectiveness of your workouts. As you become more comfortable with your program, and it starts to feel easy, change up the workout! Your body gets used to the same exercises and needs to be challenged in order to elicit change. - Everybody keeps staring at me! It may seem as if everybody in the world is looking at you as your working out. More than likely, they are not paying any attention to you. Most people zone out and focus on their own workout. Or maybe they are just staring at the clock above your treadmill wishing and hoping that their workout will be over soon!
- It’s just really hard to stick with it. Lifetime fitness is not an easy journey. It is easy to miss one workout day, then the next, and the next, and you just snowball until it’s been over two months (or more) since your last workout!
In achieving lifetime fitness plan to have minor set backs. If you miss one workout, it is not the end of the world. Just make sure you make the next one, or else it becomes increasingly difficult to get back on track the longer your wait. Maybe it is the time of day that you go that isn’t working out for you. Try exercising in the morning instead of at night, so that the day doesn’t get away from you and you’re too exhausted to even think about doing a squat. It may be difficult to adjust at first, but you’ll feel more energized for the beginning of your day, and you’ll be all done with your day’s workout! Believe it or not, there will come a point when you actually enjoy exercise, and would (gasp!) miss it, if you didn’t exercise. Incorporating fitness into your life on a regular basis becomes an actual change in behavior. There are many benefits of exercise, some of them are yet to be discovered! - Manage Stress
- Enhance Self-Esteem
- Injury Prevention/Rehabilitation
- Osteoporosis Prevention and Management
- Weight loss/maintenance
- Increase Metabolism
- Lower blood pressure
- Lower cholesterol
- Decrease risk of disease
- Obesity cure and prevention
